Kyo Karakami, which beautifully decorates shrines, temples and teahouses, can be simply described as a type of woodblock print, using hand-carved woodblocks made from magnolia wood with traditional patterns handed down from ancient times. The traditional method is to apply paint called kira or chalk powder to the surface of the woodblocks, and then match the pattern to washi paper or torinoko paper, transferring the pattern with the palm of the hand, one piece at a time. Maruni continues to use woodblocks from the Tenpo era to this day, preserving the ancient traditions of patterns, paints and tools.
