Kumamoto Castle
A famous castle that makes the most of its graceful stone walls and natural terrain
Kumamoto Castle, one of the three most famous castles in Japan, was built by the famous general Kato Kiyomasa, who poured his heart and soul into constructing it over a period of seven years starting in 1601, making use of his many years of experience in actual battles.
The castle has a large and small castle tower, 49 yagura (turrets), 18 turret gates, and 29 castle gates. The castle covers an area of approximately 98 hectares (the equivalent of 21 Tokyo Domes) and has a circumference of approximately 5.3 km. Its magnificent structure is known for its elegant stone walls, known as "Musha-gaeshi", built in the Kiyomasa style, and for its advanced castle-building techniques that skillfully make use of the natural terrain.

Suizenji Jojuen Garden
A garden based on the 53 Stations of the Tokaido
Suizenji Jojuen, a famous garden representing Kumamoto, is a Momoyama-style stroll garden that was opened in 1636 at a teahouse associated with the Hosokawa clan, feudal lords of the Edo period. It is said to have originally been built for the residence of the monk Gen'yū of Rakan-ji Temple in Yabakei Oita.
The garden, which uses the abundant underground water of Mt. Aso and is designed to resemble the 53 Stations of the Tokaido, offers beautiful views throughout the four seasons as you stroll through it. Izumi Shrine, which was built in 1877 after the Satsuma Rebellion, hosts events such as Takigi Ono and Takeda-ryu Yabusame every year.
