The 30th "TOKYU HOTELS Green Coin Forest" volunteer activity was held, marking its 16th year.
We are working to protect the environment together with our customers and the local community.

TOKYU HOTELS & RESORTS CO., LTD.

On June 15, 2024, TOKYU HOTELS & RESORTS CO., LTD. (Shibuya Ward, Tokyo; President and CEO: Jun Murai) carried out the "TOKYU HOTELS Green Coin Forest" volunteer activity, an employee-led "forest creation" initiative, in Tanbayama Village, Kitatsuru County, Yamanashi Prefecture. This activity has been carried out continuously since its launch in 2008, and this was the 30th time it has been held.

Since 2001, we have been implementing the "Green Coin" environmental conservation program, in which guests make donations according to the amount of unused amenities during their hotel stays. Through the OISCA Public Interest Foundation (Suginami-ku, Tokyo, Chairperson: Etsuko Nakano, hereinafter "OISCA"), we have supported reforestation activities at the "TOKYU HOTELS Green Coin Forest" in Tanbayama Village, Yamanashi Prefecture. This volunteer work is an employee initiative that began in 2008 with the aim of creating a forest with high watershed conservation functions and a forest rich in nature that people can enjoy by planting and cultivating trees, mainly deciduous broadleaf trees, in the "Green Coin Forest." To date, a total of about 900 employees have participated, and over the past 10 years, about 12 hectares of forest has been developed. The CO2 absorption in this area is calculated by Yamanashi Prefecture to be over 80 tons.

On the day of the volunteer work, a total of 47 people participated, including President Murai, from executives working at the headquarters and hotels in the Tokyo metropolitan area to new employees, regardless of age or gender. The main tasks this time were "thinning" and "forest road maintenance" for forest cultivation. Thinning involves cutting down unnecessary shrubs to prevent the forest from being destroyed, and forest road maintenance literally involves maintaining forest roads that have become difficult to see due to dead leaves and weeds. This volunteer work, which started with tree planting work 16 years ago, has gradually expanded the scope of its activities to include forest maintenance and utilization of forest resources.

We have signed an agreement with OISCA and Tanbayama Village with the aim of continuing our conservation activities in Tanbayama Village and promoting exchanges between the parties involved by using the area as a base for forest environment education and awareness-raising activities. In March of this year, we signed a new agreement for the fourth term, and have decided to continue our activities until March 2029. We will continue to face new challenges and continue to carry out environmental conservation activities.

A message to the participants from Mr. Sugawara, Deputy Secretary General of OISCA Yamanashi Prefecture, who accompanied us on this volunteer activity.

There are many trees in Japan's forests that were planted with great effort by our predecessors and could be used, but for various reasons they are often not used. Due to the current situation where there is no money to spend on forest maintenance, trees are left abandoned in the mountains and cannot be managed. As a result, forests that do not grow are more susceptible to flooding and have less CO2 absorption, and other adverse effects occur. An important theme of Green Coin activities is not only to increase the number of trees through reforestation, but also to promote management and use. Let's work together to create a forest while making full use of the forest's blessings.

About Green Coin Initiative

TOKYU HOTELS & Resorts has been implementing the "Green Coin" environmental conservation program at its hotels since 2001. The "Green Coin" program is a program where guests who do not use amenities such as toothbrushes and razors during their stay are asked to bring the provided green coins to the front desk, which are then used to fund environmental conservation activities. In addition, there is a "Green Card" program where a portion of the linen fee is used to fund the program if guests who stay consecutive nights understand and cooperate with the decision not to change linens such as sheets and towels. In addition, the "Earth Friendly Stay" program aims to reduce the resources used for cleaning by cleaning rooms and changing linens every three days, and a portion of the cleaning and linen fee is used to fund the program. All of these funds are donated through OISCA to the "TOKYU HOTELS Green Coin Forest" forestation activities in Tanbayama Village and the "Children's Forest" project (※).

Please see below for more information on the "Green Coin" Scheme, "Green Card" Scheme, and "Earth Friendly Stay".
