A seaside walk to free your mind and body
Izu is a popular tourist destination close to the capital region. Imaihama, in particular, is a hideaway resort for connoisseurs, and is now quietly gaining attention. If you go out to the coast just a few minutes from the station, you can see the Izu Seven Islands beyond the crystal blue horizon. Stroll through the tranquil old seaside town and walk down an alleyway, and you will be overwhelmed by a temple with a magnificent ceiling painting of a dragon. There are also unique shops and "Funato no Banya," run by local people such as fishermen and farmers in the hope of revitalizing the town. You may find your own favorite spot while walking around freely. This summer, leave the hustle and bustle behind and head to adult Imaihama.
Seafood barbecue cooked slowly over charcoal
Funato Guardhouse
This is an open-air bath facility with a panoramic view of the ocean. There is also a restaurant where you can enjoy seafood caught right in front of you. The seafood barbecue (from 2,200 yen per person) is a set menu where you can easily enjoy turban shells and dried fish. Local vegetables and seafood are also sold by weight within the facility, so it is also recommended to stop by to look for souvenirs.
A dragon swimming in the sky with cherry blossoms dancing
Shinjoji Temple
Founded in 1539, this temple is a Rinzai sect temple. The ceiling painting that catches your eye when you enter the main hall was painted by contemporary artist Kisase Seisho in 2019. Originally, the painting was painted on the side wall, but as he continued to work on it, it spread to the ceiling. Two dragons swim on the ceiling, and cherry blossoms are in full bloom (the motif is the Kawazu cherry blossoms in the temple grounds). The sight of the petals dancing is impressive, and just looking at them gives you energy. The Buddha statue that is the principal image of the temple was created by Matsumoto Genbei, a great sculptor from Izu.
