Arriving in Matsuzaki, we immediately took a walk along the "Namako Wall Street"

Namako Wall Street is a popular spot in Matsuzaki Town. The walls around the Kondo Residence, which was a drug wholesaler, are in good condition and are recommended as a photo spot.

Many buildings from the Meiji period remain, and the townscape retains the atmosphere of the Meiji Restoration, giving it a nostalgic feel.

Please take a close look at the beautiful bulges of the "Flying Ten" statue painted with trowels. Shizuoka Tangible Cultural Property

Irie Chohachi was a master plasterer, but his sculptural works also remain.

The thick zelkova pillars and beams are beautifully carved. What is carved into them?

Stopped off for some sweets in front of the Izu Chohachi Museum

On your way back from Izu Chohachi Museum, be sure to try the Sakuraba mochi from Obido, recommended by our concierge.

Sakura leaves are a specialty of Matsuzaki Town, which boasts the largest production of them in Japan. Enjoy this unique flavor at a direct sale from the producer.

Take a break at Izu Buntei and think about the life of a Meiji era kimono merchant

Izu Buntei

This was a shop and residence of a Meiji era kimono merchant. It is a two-story building with a namako wall and has a beautiful courtyard. It is currently open to the public as a free rest area.

Next to Izu Buntei there is a photo spot like this. There is also a foot bath.

The second floor of Izu Buntei. A Japanese-style room from the Meiji period has been beautifully preserved.

Discover nostalgic architectural beauty in small details such as fittings and glass

Enjoy a stroll towards Matsuzaki Port

This fishery cooperative store is located on the sea side of Matsuzaki, near Matsuzaki Fishing Port. You can purchase live fish and processed seafood products here.

We bite into freshly made satsumaage at Hayama, a manufacturer and seller of satsumaage near the fishing cooperative.

Every morning, we place the day's final sale quantity into wooden molds one by one and carefully make them by hand.

Enjoy fresh seafood and local delicacies from Nishiizu for lunch

In addition to counter seats, there are also table seats and raised seats, making for a relaxing atmosphere.

Kuon

This popular restaurant is run by a chef who trained at a high-end sushi restaurant in Tokyo. For lunch, we recommend the seafood bowl as well as sushi.

It is located on a quaint street facing the Nakagawa River, next to the Nakase residence with its namako wall.

Kuon's recommended lunch is the seafood bowl. You can enjoy fresh seasonal seafood.

You can also enjoy Nishiizu Tako's specialty dish, salted bonito udon.

Experience the warmth of the local people at the Izu Matsuzaki Deai Village Kura

The old folk gallery "Kurara" is a 150-year-old storehouse-style building owned by 25 mothers. Handmade works are on display.

An example of one of Kura's handmade works. How about buying one as a souvenir?

We also have sweets and lunches available on certain days and at certain times. Please check in advance. Click on the image to link to the website.

I want to stop by a popular pastry shop that even Shimoda residents go out of their way to visit

Take a walk around Matsuzaki Town and refuel with sweet treats. The aroma of coffee and the casually decorated plants are wonderful.

Raspberry flavored confectionery

This pastry shop is popular among the staff of SHIMODA TOKYU HOTEL. There are many Shimoda locals who take the time to stop by for tea while out for a drive. The gentle and tasteful personality of the lady is also the secret to its popularity.

The interior of the restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere. It's so comfortable that you'll want to stay for a while.

The concierge's recommendation is a cake made with fruit. In autumn, apple is the best!

Strawberries, lemons, mandarins, yellow peaches, ponkan, bananas, walnuts, chocolate...it's hard to choose.

Go a step further and visit the Important Cultural Property Iwaka School

It takes less than 10 minutes to get there from Matsuzaki-cho by Tokai Bus bound for Yagiyama. It's a place you should definitely visit while keeping an eye on the bus schedule.

Important Cultural Property Iwaka School

It is the oldest elementary school in the Izu region, and features a temple-like architectural style that makes use of namako walls and Western elements such as balconies.
Construction began in April 1879 and was completed in September of the following year, making it an impressive building with a Western-style design. It is known as the third oldest building in Japan after the former Mutsuwa School in Kofu (1875) and the former Kaichi School in Matsumoto (1876).
The two-year renovation work was completed in November 1992, and the building was restored to its appearance in 1880.
(Quoted from the Matsuzaki Town Faith Corporation website)

The museum recreates classroom scenes from the elementary school that was completed in 1880.

The transom of the classroom on the second floor is decorated with a thousand paper cranes painted by Chohachi Irie using plastering techniques and coloring. You will never tire of looking at the expressions on each and every crane.

The textbooks that were actually used are on display. It's interesting to compare the differences between them and current textbooks.

Choose souvenirs and take a break at Kaikatei in the garden of Iwaka School. The building was originally used as the Iwaka Trading Company and later as the Iwaka Village Office.

Kaikatei's specialty is Takekawa Manju. A nostalgic-tasting bun made by a local Japanese sweets shop. The bean paste inside has a simple and gentle taste.

The area around Iwaka School is a simple village surrounded by woodland. It was here that the oldest elementary school in Izu was established.

We have introduced an example of a bus trip that can be enjoyed starting from SHIMODA TOKYU HOTEL. Izu is an area that is more interesting the more you visit. Why not try it out during your next stay?
We have many other recommended courses, so please feel free to ask at the concierge desk.
