Nishiizu is a place where you can enjoy the diverse ria coastline, tombolo phenomenon, and Mount Fuji.
Traditional culture, such as the bonito flakes shop in Tako and the Namako Wall Street in Matsuzaki Town, is also interesting!

A trip to experience the food culture of Izu by visiting the bonito flakes and salted bonito factories that still remain in Nishiizu Tago.
Take a stroll along the Namako Wall Street in Matsuzaki Town, passing through the scenic Dogashima Island
If it's cherry blossom season, you can enjoy sakura leaf mochi while admiring the impressive rows of cherry blossom trees along the Naka River.
Furthermore, we will visit a special spot for weeping cherry blossoms.
If it's the season when you want to relax, it's nice to take a detour to an open-air bath along a mountain stream.

Kanesa Dried Bonito Shop

Nishiizu Tago's bonito has a long history, with records showing that it was paid as tax to the imperial court as far back as the Nara period. Kanesa Katsuobushi Shoten is a store that can be considered a town heritage, passing on the food culture of the Tago region, which prospered mainly through bonito fishing.
You can hear from Mr. Serizawa, the fifth-generation owner, about the history of katsuobushi and the traditional production process.
*Advance reservations are recommended.

Sanshiro Island (Zoujima, Denbei)

Sanshiro Islands are made up of four islands, Denbeijima, Nakanojima, Okinosejima, and Takashima, located about 200 meters offshore, and are so named because they appear to be three or four islands depending on the angle from which they are viewed. Also, at low tide, shallows appear all the way to Denbeijima, the closest island, allowing you to walk across without getting your feet wet. This phenomenon is called "tombolo" and is extremely rare even in Japan. (Quoted from the Nishiizu website)

Dogashima

A beautiful scenic spot with a ria coastline and small islands. Also known as the Matsushima of Izu, it is popular for the islands that can be toured by sightseeing boat and the Tenmado Cave, which is the highlight. Even among the beautiful sunsets in Nishiizu, the sunsets at Dogashima are very picturesque, with the silhouettes of the islands and pine trees overlapping with the sunset sky and sea.

Access

By bus:
Take the Tokai Bus bound for Matsuzaki/Dogashima from bus stop number 5 in front of Izukyu-Shimoda Station, about 1 hour

Dogashima Restaurant

The salted bonito produced by Kanesa Katsuobushi Shoten has been made into the local gourmet dish "Salted Katsuo Udon"! It has also participated in the B1 Grand Prix National Championships.

Matsuzaki Town Sea Cucumber Wall Street

If you head towards the Matsuzaki Town Tourist Association, you will see a group of buildings made of namako walls in the surrounding area. There is also a free parking lot.
Namako walls are made by lining up flat tiles and hardening them with plaster. It is said that the name came from the fact that the raised white plaster looks like a sea cucumber that lives in the sea.

Baigetsuen Sakurada store

A Japanese sweets shop along the Naka River that runs through Matsuzaki Town. In spring, the shop is surrounded by rows of cherry blossom trees and flower fields made from rice paddies along the Naka River, making it a spot where you can enjoy both flowers and dumplings.
Matsuzaki Town is the number one producer of cherry blossom leaves in Japan. Baigetsuen is also known for its popular Sakura Leaf Mochi and Sakura Kintsuba, which are made using Matsuzaki-grown cherry leaves.

Osawaso Annex Mountain House Open-air Bath

It is within walking distance of the roadside station Hana no Sanseien and the former Yoda residence. It used to be a mixed bath, but now there are separate outdoor baths for men and women, and you can use the showers. The riverside rest area is comfortable, and snacks are also available.

Hohonji Temple

The weeping cherry tree in the front garden is beautiful and is designated as a cultural asset of Shimoda City.
The moss-covered stone steps and stone Buddha statues are very picturesque, making this a Rinzai sect temple where you'll want to visit with a pure heart.
The principal image is Shokannon Bodhisattva, and the temple is designated as the 48th temple on the Izu 88 Pilgrimage Route.
