The aquarium is home to over 5,000 marine creatures. This is the road where Commodore Perry marched to conclude the Treaty of Shimoda, when he arrived on the Black Ships at Ryosenji Temple. Currently, it is about 500m from Ryosenji Temple to Shimoda Park. It is a stone-paved path along the Hirame River lined with willow trees. There are rows of quaint houses made of namako walls and Izu stone.

This temple served as a reception center for American envoys including Perry, and as a place for negotiations with the Tokugawa shogunate.

Shimoda is a city that remains in the history of the opening of Japan to the world at the end of the Edo period, and there are many historical materials that you should definitely see. The Black Ships Memorial Museum conveys valuable historical materials that can only be found here.
The Black Ship Trompe L'oeil Museum, where you can learn about Shimoda's history and culture in a fun way through trick art, opened in November 2022.

This is a memorial museum for Okichi, who lived a tragic life after being summoned to be a concubine to the American Consul General Harris at Hofukuji Temple in Hachimanyama. Okichi's grave is also at Hofukuji Temple. It is also said that Katsu Kaishu petitioned Yamauchi Yodo here, and Ryoma Sakamoto was pardoned for defecting from his domain.

It takes about 3 minutes by ropeway. From the observation deck at the summit, you can see Shimoda Port below and the Izu Seven Islands floating on the horizon.
